House rules of the Metropolitan Cathedral Church of St. Stephen

St. Stephen's Cathedral is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Vienna in addition to being a chapter and parish church. The church's patron saint is the Holy First Martyr Stephen.

You are invited to visit the cathedral daily during the following opening hours:

Business days from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Sundays and holidays from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Visits to the church service area are not permitted during the church services.

In the interests of all church visitors, the cathedral supervisors will ensure compliance with the house rules (with the support of the police where necessary). Here at the cathedral, we focus our efforts on preserving the dignity of the House of God and the worthy celebration of the church services.

All visitors must accept these house rules upon entering the cathedral and are required to consider the character of the church as a place of worship through their behaviour:

  • You may only visit the cathedral while wearing appropriate clothing. Assessing what is appropriate is the responsibility of the supervisory staff.

  • Please have consideration for other visitors and avoid making excess noise and talking loudly. Mobile phones must be switched to silent. • Smoking, eating and drinking are not permitted in the cathedral.

  • Animals are not permitted; except guide dogs or other assistance dogs.

  • Taking large items of luggage into the cathedral is prohibited; in case of doubt, the decision rests with the supervisory staff.

  • Abandoned luggage will be removed by the management for safety reasons.

  • Begging is not permitted in the cathedral; the entrance area must remain unobstructed for safety reasons.

  • Photos may only be taken for private purposes and without the use of a tripod and flash; taking photos and filming for commercial purposes and in the context of press coverage is only permitted with the prior approval of the Church Master’s office.

  • Carrying weapons is strictly prohibited, except by public security bodies.

  • Visitors are liable for any damage caused by their behaviour.

  • Specialist guided tours in the cathedral are subject to a fee.

  • Instructions from the staff at the cathedral church must be followed. Please keep in mind that the supervisory authorities provide their service in the best interests of all visitors and treat them politely and with manners.

In the event of a violation of the house rules, the person concerned may be asked to leave the church. People who have been banned are not permitted to enter St. Stephen's Cathedral. Agreed upon by the Metropolitan Cathedral Chapter on 20/9/2017.
